Communication

Instead of making plans face to face with all the members and actors, which can be extremely difficult due to other commitments therefore we often use social media to discuss things such as whether we are free to film that day or what to wear, what do we need to bring e.t.c.

We have a group chat on Whatsapp to discuss media related things.

We also use our phones and Facebook Messenger to ask our main actor Matilda things related to the shoot. For example, what does she need wear, what time and where are we meeting and others.

1st Shoot Green Screen/Bloopers

This was our very first shoot for our music video , we are using the green screen for part of the performance shots in our video and the background will be pastel colours like pink, yellow and blue .

Second Shoot

On our second shoot we went to Shoreditch in London to film part  of our video, we picked Shoreditch because it has interesting street art. We went to Hanbury street, Aldgate East and Brick Lane. We chose to use street art/graffiti as as background in our music video as the part we are filming in front of it is the   rap scene and we felt that as Rap is urban and so is graffiti they would both link well with each other.

Reviewing Our First Piece Of Footage

We started to review our second piece of footage we shot to see if we could begin to edit some of it in.
Most of the footage we can use but we still need to shoot the narrative parts so it fits in with the performance shots.

Audience Questionnaire

Audience Questionnaire

We composed a questionnaire for our audience to find out what kinds of things we should include in our video and what would appeal to them.

Powered by Typeform

The results of the questionnaire showed;

We also sampled these questions with a focus group.

Some of our feedback showed that our audience prefers;
  • something distinctive in a video that sets it apart from others.
  • a video that is entertaining
  • a video that has a narrative
  • when it isn't just a singer performing
They also said that they liked our song and our idea after the pitch was read to them, and they would like to see lots of setting changes and bright colours. They also thought we should edit it to the beat so that the song feels upbeat.
Overall our feedback about our idea was positive and there were things we weren't thinking about including like linking the performance shots (with a balloon from one scene still floating in another).

Props

In our music video we use a more modern polaroid camera this is so  at the end of the video the audience will be able to see the photo taken with the main artist and her friends

We will be using bright coloured balloons in our video  as they will be apart of a room in the background,  they will  give a fun and creative effect to our video

The phone will be used in the video to show the communication between the performers , the phone is  a key factor  of our video as it helps explain the story

SWOT

Strengths Of Our Idea

  • Allows us to film our video in various places
  • We can use different editing techniques(split screen, green screen, graphics)
  • We can experiment with the artist hair and makeup and costume
  • Are able to use different lighting
  • Pop allows us to be creative without lots of technology and equipment

Weaknesses Of Our Idea

  • difficult to film in public locations
  • It is hard to have all of our group available at one time was we have different timetables
  • We are filming in the day time so this limits our filming time as it begins to get dark by 4 o'clock

Opportunities

  • Experiment with various editing techniques that we didn't use last year such as Green Screen
  • to be able to film in unique locations
  • To learn about the production side of a music video

Threats To Our Idea

  • It will take a lot of editing time so its important we are organised
  • Some public locations may not like us to film there

Planning - Creating the Animatic Storyboard

We started drawing what our music video looks like on paper and we are going to create an animatic storyboard with the pictures along with our chosen song.

Pitch

Our music video will start with the audience meeting a boy and girl(Matilda the main artist) that have met each other in a local Café. The audience will see that the boy is trying to flirt with the girl and eventually he gets his way and they both exchange numbers. After the numbers have been exchanged and the girl thinks he's a nice guy we see another girl walk in the café and the boy immediately turns and stares at the other girl and completely loses interest in Matilda. Matilda is disgusted and walks out with her friends.

When the chorus kicks in there will be various performance shots of Matilda singing in different locations. Some of the locations will be in a room full of balloons, outside in the street and her performing in front of a green screen. When the chorus ends we see Matilda walking through a park and the audience will meet another boy  who she bumps in to, as they bump into each other she drops her phone and John picks It up and gets her number, she gets her phone back but when she leaves he keeps calling her phone non stop.

When the chorus starts again we still see the boy calling and calling Matilda, we then again cut to performance shots with the balloon room and the green screen.
When the rap comes in the song the location will change to Camden town where Matilda will be walking down the street down quiet lanes with a sassy attitude.

In the last chorus Matilda will be sitting on her bed with all of her friends then there will be a intercut to them in winter wonderland doing activities like arcade games.
When the song in nearly at the end Matilda will take a polaroid with her friends and the last shot will be of the polaroid of her and her friends together.

Influential Music Video #3

Gym Class Heroes: Ass Back Home (Cover by Tiffany Alvord & Luke Conard)

I have chosen this video because the genre is pop and it is very upbeat. The main performer also has a very similar performing attitude as how we want our performer to act in the music video.

We are going to use graphics in the editing of our music video. This cover video shows exactly the types of graphics we want to use, such as the white lines on the guitar and the use of shapes with gesture. We are going to edit the graphics on After Effects and using a drawing pad to draw lines on different frames so when the video is played, the graphics shows up in a way that it does in this video (almost like it is flashing at you). We are planning to use graphics at the very beginning to illustrate the beats coming out of the phone like it is ringing. This will be edited to the beat of the song so it looks like it is part of the song.

They also drew the visual of what was in the lyrics, for example, they drew a door when they said "I left the keys under the mat to our front door". We also would like to do something similar in our music video because it will make our visuals more interesting to the audience.

At the end we can tell that their video is filmed on green screen which we will also use as part of the performance shots. In our video, we wanted to use green screen so we can change the background to any colours we want - pastel colours. This technique will also make it much easier to apply split screens in our editing.

Despite the graphics, we are also planning to play around with presenting some part of the lyrics on screen and the lyrics video for this song is a great example.

The placement of the lyrics is very interesting. They have chosen to place them either on parts of the character's body where there isn't much body language shown or around the still items in the background of the shot such as a cupboard or a bowl.

They have also used a lot of opening shots of something to make the lyrics seems like it is actually there and when you open the door, it covers it or the opposite like near the end, the lyrics showed up on the girl's body as soon as the door was opened.

They have also used a slight moving motion to make it seem like it is moving so it doesn't look like it was harshly placed there but is part of the whole scene. This technique also creates a bit of fun for audience to view. However, after a while it gets boring because it is always using the same thing so we will only show lyrics for a very short amount of time to make visuals exciting in our music video.

Influential Music Video #2

                                                      Influential Text Analysis

Meghan Trainors Video  "All About That Bass"  I chose as an influential text because it is a pop genre which is the same genre as our song and is upbeat and includes a lot of ideas we may want to include in our video. Meghan is very girly in this video but also shows a lot of attitude and confidence which is what we would like our video to consist of.

In the video Meghan wears minimal make up throughout, such as mascara eyeliner and a little bit of foundation which is what we like for our main performer.

In the Video Meghan has a variety of hairstyles however they are simple and very girly which portray her to be innocent. The video gives off an impression that she's dressed up to be perfect, in parts of the video there are shots that are filmed in what looks to be her room, her room is very neat and tidy again giving off a persona that's she's perfect which relates to the song lyrics.

The lyrics are saying to the audience that if your not super skinny it doesn't mean your not perfect or you don't look nice. Meghan's saying that being curvy or bigger is okay which relates to a wide audience as their is a lot of insecure people about their weight and how they look.

We can get a lot if inspiration from the video for example the hair and make up and the costume, the light pastel colours used and the attitude

Mood Boarding

Mood Board
This is our mood board, which we've tried to focus on a fun and girly vibe. There are lots of images of balloons, lips, settings and outfits; things that connote youth and femininity. But there are also pictures that contradict with this theme.

These pictures show the general star image that our main performer (Matilda) with items like knitted jumpers, lace skirts, dresses and signature red lipstick.

Planning - Storyboarding and Analysing Lyrics

Analysing the Lyrics

We have analysed the lyrics for our chosen song - 'Broken Hearted' by Karmin. This is what we think the lyrics meant and how we can expand it in our music video.
